It took a little while, but the Lions of Penn State would eventually pull away from an upstart San Diego State squad. The final score today in Happy Valley, 37-21.
The Lions would jump out to a 13-7 lead and looked like they would continue to roll, when the Aztecs would get a big drive in which they needed only 3 plays to go 75 yards. The play would result in a touchdown and a 1 point San Diego lead.
Penn State would take advantage of a fumbled punt and get the ball right back. They would convert on a short field to take back the lead 20-14. It was a 13 yard pass from Christian Hackengerg to Mark Allen.
On the Aztecs next possession, they would fumble the ball on their first play of the drive and give it right back to Penn St. The Lions would march 23 yards and add to their lead with another touchdown. It would culminate in a Hackenberg 11 yard TD pass to give the Lions a 27-14 lead.
In the third quarter, after a Lion fumble on the punt, San Diego State would get the ball back and cut the lead to 27-21. It was a 6 play drive that was finished off by a Donnel Pumphrey 1 yard TD run.
Penn State would hold the Aztecs from that point on, and the offense would put the game away adding 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter including a 71 yard fumble return by Austin Johnson. The final score today 37-21.
