Starting with their Dec, 29th match-up against Fairleigh Dickinson to commence play in the Northeast Conference, the Robert Morris University, Women’s Basketball team, ran through all of their NEC opponents in January (7-0), claiming a perfect 9-0 conference mark. The last Colonials squad to go unbeaten over a full month was the 2009-2010 team when they went 8-0 in February of 2010.
For their laudable efforts, head coach Charlie Buscaglia’s crew entered the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll Tuesday at #24. The last time was Dec. 7 2011 when RMU appeared in their rankings, also at the 24 slot.
The Mid-Major Poll is composed of teams from these conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast, Western Athletic.
Freshman Power: Honoka Ikematsu, a 5-foot-6 guard and the first player from Japan in Robert Morris history, picked up on Wednesday her second NEC Rookie of the Week honor. The native of Kumamoto, Japan hit the top of the scoresheet with 16 points in the Saturday 72-49 victory over the Bryant University Bulldogs. She delivered a career-high eight assists plus eight points and five rebounds Monday in RMU’s 66-47 triumph against the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils.
Ikematsu’s shooting skills and contributions were examined recently in the Post-Gazette by Omari Sankofa II.
Sophomore Success: Earlier in January at the Post-Gazette, Sankofa credits second-year center Nneka Ezeigbo as one of the reasons for RMU’s success on the hardwood. The native of Ewing, New Jersey has put up seven double-doubles so far in 2017-2018.
Senior Force In The Middle: Mikalah Mulrain owns 25 blocked shots this season, bringing her career total to 159. The 6-foot-3 center from Brampton, Ontario is 10 away from Anna Gailite’s record of 169, which she set from 2009-2013.
Senior Force, Part II: Jocelynne Jones, a forward from Sicklerville, New Jersey, is the Colonials’ “Artful Dodger” as she has 49 steals so far over 20 games played.
Senior Force, Part III: Checking in on the 6-foot-1 forward from Barrie, Ontario…
Helping @RMUAthletics run its win streak to NINE, the multi-talented Megan Smith averaged 16.0 points, 5.5 boards and 2.5 assists per victory last week.
