Robert Morris And Duquesne WBB Hit The Road In The First Round Of The 2018 WNIT

Pittsburgh, Pa. –  Two of the three NCAA D-1 women’s basketball squads in Allegheny County are hitting the road to take part in the 64-team field of the 2018 Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

The Duquesne Dukes (23-7 overall, 13-3 Atlantic 10) and the Robert Morris Colonials (25-7, 16-2 Northeast Conference) are part of a tourney roster of 37 teams claiming 20 or more victories during the 2017-2018 campaign.

Duquesne travels to the Buckeye State for a first-round clash at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio on Thursday, March 15 as they oppose the Redhawks of Miami University (21-10, 12-6 Mid-American Conference). The match-up hits the hardwood at 7:00 p.m. and is on ESPN3.

Their 23 victories tied for the fourth most in a single-season. The Dukes were third in the Atlantic 10 averaging 70.4 points-per-contest. The Red and Blue lost to the Saint Louis Billikens (17-15, 9-7 A-10) in the conference quarterfinals.

Miami wound up second in the East Division of the MAC behind the University of Buffalo Bulls (27-5, 16-2 MAC). The Red and White lost to the Central Michigan Chippewas (28-4, 17-1 MAC) in the conference semifinals.

This meeting is the fifth between the two with the last being Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013 which ended in a 78-58 Duquesne triumph. The Dukes are in front of the series 3-1 and are 2-0 at Millett Hall.

Robert Morris stays in the Keystone State for their first-round confrontation at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia on Friday, March 16 when they face the Drexel University Dragons (26-7, 16-2 Colonial Athletic Association). It is the second Postseason WNIT appearance for RMU and the sixth postseason tournament in nine seasons.

The contest gets underway at 7:00 p.m. and is just the second competition between the programs. The Colonials won the previous encounter 67-48 during the 1981-1982 season.

RMU put up a school-record 25 wins overall this season and averaged 62.4 points-per-game. The Blue, White, and Red’s defense allowed just 53.6 points-per-contest. They went down 66-56 in the NEC Championship Game to the Saint Francis Red Flash (24-9, 16-2 NEC).

Drexel makes their eighth appearance in the WNIT. The Dragons tallied 63.7 points-per-matchup. They derailed in their conference championship, 57-45, to the Elon University Phoenix (25-7, 14-4 CAA).
