The Robert Morris Colonials (13-13-2, 12-8-2) defeat the Sacred Heart Pioneers (7-16-4, 5-12-4) by the score of 3-1 to sweep Sacred Heart and gain sole possession of third place in the Atlantic Hockey Conference with 26 points on the year.
The Colonials controlled the tempo from the moment the puck dropped. Robert Morris would out shoot Sacred Heart in the first period, but wouldn’t get their first goal until the 3:17 mark. That goal would be scored by Michael Coyne. Coyne’s first goal of the season would be assisted by Michael Louria and Robert Powers. That goal would give the Colonial’s the lead. Robert Morris wouldn’t lose that lead for the rest of the game.
The second period would be the most penalized of the game. Robert Morris would have their first penalty of the game called on them just 1:39 into the second period. That would also be the first of four penalties in the second period. The next three would all be called on Sacred Heart, but only one will result in a power play goal. That penalty was on Hunter Fargey for interference and took place at the 15:04 mark in the second period. Robert Morris would score a power play goal shortly thereafter off the stick of Timmy Moore. It was Moore’s ninth goal of the season and he is now tied for second (Alex Tonge) on the team in points with 29 on the year. After Moore’s goal, Robert Morris would go into the second intermission with a 2-0 lead over St. Francis.
It wouldn’t take Robert Morris long to put the Pioneers away as they would extend their lead to 3-0 just 5:47 into the third. That goal would be scored by Eric Israel. It would be just Israel’s third goal of the season. For the remainder of the game, Sacred Heart would get into desperation mode and end up out-shooting the Colonials 10-9. They would get a garbage time goal with 4:53 left in the game to make it a 3-1 game. That goal would be scored by Vito Bavaro for the Pioneers. That would be the last goal of the game and the Colonials would win the second game of their weekend sweep by the score of 3-1.
In the game, Robert Morris star goalie Francis Marotte would put up marvelous numbers with 26 saves and just letting in the one goal. As for Sacred Heart netminder Brett Magnus, he would make 23 saves while letting in three goals in the loss.
Robert Morris now sits in sole possession of third place in the AHC. They only sit two points back of Canisius (14-12-2, 14-8) and Holy Cross (12-11-7, 11-7-6) who both have 28 points in conference play. Robert Morris next two game series will be against RIT (10-14-2, 9-10-1) at The Island, as the team looks to extend their now three game winning streak.
