TOP ranked Hilltopper face off against Fairmont Sunday

The Number 1 team in the Nation will travel to Fairmont State Sunday afternoon to face off against one of their arch rivals.   When the Hilltoppers faceoff against Wheeling Jesuit or the Falcons of Fairmont State, it’s always a battle.   Adding to that is the fact that the game will be televised on AT&T Sport Net out of Pittsburg,(the old rootSports)so both of these teams will likely look to step up.

West Liberty is coming off a beat down they gave out to Shepherd on Wednesday, scoring 115 points and breaking an NCAA record with three pointers made by 11 different players. The undefeated Hilltoppers will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak to 19-0 while Fairmont on the other hand, is coming off a road loss to Wheeling Jesuit in which they fell 88-82.   They played really well in a building that is difficult to get victories in.

The Fighting Falcons are 10-3 in conference play and 14-5 overall.  One of those losses came to the Hilltoppers earlier in the season 106-100.

Jason Jolly scored 24 points to lead all players in the game against the Cardinals. He also led in the first game against West Liberty with 19 points, although the Falcons had 5 guys in double figures in that game.  They really tested the Hilltopper defense in that game.

West Liberty received a big game from Dalton Bolon on Wednesday along with Griffin, Monteroso and Smith.   Dan Monteroso scored 27 in their last go around.  He filled up the rest of his stat sheet also grabbing 6 rebounds, 4 blocks and a couple assists.  He will need to step up yet again.

When coach was asked about Sundays game, he had this to say.

“I think it’s one of the better rivalries in the region if not the country,” Howlett said. “The coaches know the coaches. The players know the players. It was a great atmosphere when we played them here and I expect another great atmosphere over there. I know our guys are going to be ready to go.”

It will be a 5pm start Sunday at Joe Retton Arena in Fairmont.  As mentioned, if you can not get down to see the game, it will be on Pittsburgh’s, AT&T Sports Net.  Check local listings for details.
