Washington Wild Things: 2018 Frontier League Home Schedule

Washington, Pa. – With the passing of each day, the sunlight lasts a tad longer, and soon the warm breezes of spring and summer will be ready for Washington Wild Things baseball. The Red, Black, and White enter their 17th season as a member of the Frontier League.

Last season Washington put together a record of 53-43, finishing second in the Eastern Division, and collecting a Wild Card slot in the FL playoffs under manager Gregg Langbehn. They were fifth in league with 463 RBI as a team in 3168 at-bats over 96 games.

Coming back to patrol the infield for the Wild Things is 2017 Frontier League All-Star and Post-Season All-Star Kane Sweeney. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound first baseman claimed a .296 average, a 457 on-base percentage, 15 home runs and 61 RBI in 94 contests.

Sweeny spoke with Kyle Dawson on the team’s web page about his return, “My thoughts on coming back are pretty simple. I really enjoyed last season. We had great fans and a great community that supported us all year long. It was the most fun I’ve had playing baseball in a long time. Our locker room was great [and] I felt like we had great chemistry. [Coach Gregg Langbehn] did a great job of making it fun to come to the field every single day.”

Back to add their names to the lineup card is a trio of 2017 FL All-Stars. Catcher Kyle Pollock (11 home runs, 41 RBI), infielder Mike Hill (13 HR’s, 39 RBI), and outfielder Rashad Brown (.275 average, 29 stolen bases) are ready to add to their legacy at Wild Things Park.

Returning to the mound this summer is 2017 FL All-Star pitcher Zach Strecker. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound right-hander recorded 40 strike-outs, and 20 saves last season in 61.2 innings of work.

Strecker talked with Kyle Dawson about his Wild Things experience on the team website, “Washington was a one-of-a-kind experience that I’ll always cherish. I was given another chance of playing baseball and there were a lot of personal and team successes that have formed memories for a lifetime. The main difference between Washington and playing in affiliated ball is the looseness and ability to relax and have fun. I lost sight of baseball being the game I grew up loving to play as a kid and the Wild Things allowed me to go back to who I was.”

Also answering the call to be part of the pitching staff is 2017 FL All-Star right-hander Chase Cunningham (10 wins, 64 strikeouts). Looking to build on last summer’s accomplishments are a pair of righty’s Davis Adkins (5 wins, 50 strikeouts) and Aaron Burns (4 wins, 56 strikeouts).

The Red, Black, and White commence the regular season on the road with a three-game series the weekend of May 11-12 at Historic Bosse Field against the Evansville Otters.
