Magnetic Seed Localization (MSL) is a recently developed and evaluated technique for breast localization, similar in concept to RSL, which can be adapted for use in the axilla. MSL utilizes an approximately 5 mm × 1 mm paramagnetic steel and iron oxide pellet (“seed”), which is made of low-nickel stainless steel. 1. This study’s finding indicate that radiofrequency identification tags may be a safe and effective method of preoperative, wireless localization of nonpalpable breast lesions, without localization failures or postoperative infection. Radioactive Seed Localization for Breast Surgery. finding the area of the breast involved. Using a seed instead of a wire may allow for less breast tissue removal. What to expect during seed localization. During the Procedure: You will have an ultrasound or mammogram of your breast.
Nov 28, During a core needle biopsy, I had breast seed localization using radiofrequency
titanium clip implanted at the site of a small cancerous tumor, to show doctors the tumor's breast seed localization using radiofrequency
during subsequent procedures. This week I'm having a lumpectomy, and the day before that surgery, they're implanting a radioactive seed to show the surgeon the location of the tumor. I don't understand why the titanium marker and the radioactive seed are both needed, and I haven't gotten a clear answer to this question. Of course I'd rather not have a radioactive seed implanted if it's not necessary.
